Fabric Structures

Project name: Yarrow Stadium – West Stand, Taranaki
Material used: Ferrari  TX30-Type 2
Fabric Supplied By: Serge Ferrari,

What did the client request?

The Client’s brief was to provide a lightweight fabric roof design solution to fit to the existing structural steel on the West grandstand. The existing structure was comprised of 14no. rafters requiring 13no. separate fabric panels and 2no. wing panels at the North and South ends of the stand.

What makes this project unique?

This project offered the opportunity to provide a modern, cost effective fabric roof solution fitting to existing steelwork. The existing roof needed to be removed, new arches and donobraces installed and all existing steel repainted before we could start the installation of the new fabric roof. No work was permitted during the NPC rugby competition so the organisation and sequencing of the various construction elements was critical. Due to the requirement to fit to the existing steel we came up with a fabric gutter system between each rafter to carry the rainwater from the canopies into the internal gutter at the rear of the stand. We also had to install weather boots at the interface of our fabric with the existing steel bracing struts and dress our fabric into the internal gutter at the rear of the stand.
