Industrial Textiles Qualification Support

As many of you may be aware, the Advanced Textiles Association New Zealand (formerly OFPANZ) have been working over the last two years with MAST Academy and Hang Aro Rau to develop programmes for the new Level 3 and Level 4 NZ Certificates for Industrial Textiles. This follows an extensive review.

There are two new /revised qualifications:

NZ Certificate in Industrial Textiles Level 3

NZ Certificate in Advanced Textiles Level 4 with strands in Industrial Fabrication and Industrial Trimming.

We have developed two pathways for learners to meet industry need.

The first is an apprenticeship, combining the level 3 and 4 qualifications. This enables the learner to gain entry level skills and then to move onto the level 4. This complex apprenticeship should attract apprenticeship funding.

The second is a level 4 only programme. This is for individuals who have previously completed the level 3 qualification or those who have been working in the industry for some time.

If you can answer the 3 short questions at the end of this email by Oct 18th that would be great. Reply back to [email protected]  or call Lesley direct on 022 601 9225  if you have any questions.

The programme is designed to be delivered in the workplace.  It allows learners new to industrial textiles to grow their skills and knowledge. The combined apprenticeship programme is 40 months in duration with an exit at level 3 after 19 months.

Topics covered include:

  • Safety and culture
  • Working environment including policies, procedures and documentation
  • Fabrication and trimming tools, sewing machines and equipment
  • Job specification interpretation from drawings, measurements and calculations,
  • Making patterns and templates
  • Customer service skills
  • Quality of end product

The standards covered in the programme are:

Level 3 All learners complete all standards.

Standard Standard Title Version Level Credits
40015 Describe safe work practices, policies and procedures in an industrial textile fabrication or trimming workplace 11
40018 Set up and maintain sewing machines used in an industrial textile fabrication or trimming workplace
40019 Use and maintain tools and equipment in an industrial textile fabrication or trimming workplace
40020 Measure, make patterns or templates, and mark out material in an industrial textile fabrication or trimming workplace 15
40021 Describe materials used in the industrial textile fabrication or trimming industry
40022 Prepare and cut materials to specifications in an industrial textile fabrication or trimming workplace
40023 Perform elementary seaming and hemming work in an industrial textile fabrication or trimming workplace
40024 Fit reinforcements and attachments in an industrial textile fabrication or trimming workplace
40025 Fit and remove zips in an industrial textile fabrication or trimming workplace

Following on from the level 3, learners get to work on more complex/large projects in their chosen field. They will be able to choose between fabrication or trimming and this enables them to have flexibility over their learning and the project they complete for their final assessment.

On completion, graduates will be skilled industrial fabricators or industrial trimmers.

Please answer the following questions:

The questions are

  1. Do you see this as a need in Industry for a full apprenticeship?
  1. Do you agree with the apprenticeship pathway of starting at Level 3 and completing at Level 4 giving the learner 2 qualifications upon completion.
  1. Is there a need for a level 4 only pathway for those learners who have already completed the level 3 qualification?
