This year, one of our long-standing industry suppliers, W Wiggins, marks an extraordinary 160 years in business. Another, Shann NZ marks 70 years in business and Reid & Twiname celebrated 100 years just last year. In an industry shaped by changing materials, evolving technology, and shifting markets, reaching a milestone of that scale is no small feat. It’s a reminder of what resilience, adaptability, and long-term commitment can achieve.

But milestones aren’t only about big numbers or centuries in business. In fact, it’s often the smaller, more frequent milestones that have the biggest impact on our people, our culture, and our motivation.
Celebrating the Wins Along the Way
In a busy workshop or office, it’s easy to move straight from one job to the next. Finish a project, invoice it, move on. Yet taking a moment to acknowledge achievements—finishing a complex installation, delivering a project on time and on budget, or hitting targets in the first 100 days of the year—creates a sense of progress and pride. These moments matter. They remind teams that their effort is seen and valued, and they reinforce a shared sense of purpose.

People Milestones Matter More Than Ever
Staff anniversaries are another milestone worth celebrating—whether that’s 2 years, 5 years, or decades with the same business. In today’s environment, employee turnover isn’t what it used to be, and retaining skilled people in our industry is increasingly challenging. Recognising loyalty and contribution builds morale, strengthens culture, and reinforces that people are more than just a number on the payroll. A simple acknowledgment can go a long way in making someone feel they belong—and want to stay.
When you work alone, it’s easy to downplay these achievements. But stopping to recognise how far you’ve come is both motivating and rewarding. It’s a reminder that growth doesn’t always come in giant leaps—often it’s built steadily, job by job.
Industry-Specific Milestones to Celebrate:
In textile fabrication workshops and supplier businesses, milestones might look like:

Each of these represents progress, learning, and commitment to improving what we do.
Why It Matters
Celebrating milestones isn’t about ego or self-congratulation. It’s about recognising effort, reinforcing positive behaviours, and building momentum. It boosts morale, strengthens team connections, and helps businesses—large and small—stay motivated in what can be a demanding industry.
So whether you’re celebrating 160 years, 16 years, or your first 16 weeks, take the time to acknowledge the moment. These milestones are the threads that weave together a stronger, more resilient industry-one achievement at a time.
